Literary Festival

Sunday, March 22nd, 1-5pm, Writing Massachusetts at Hingham Public Library
Hingham Public Library welcomes booklovers of all ages to “Writing Massachusetts,” a literary festival celebrating the 2008 Massachusetts Book Awards. The awards are presented annually by the Massachusetts Center for the Book, an affiliate of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, and are given in four categories: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and children's literature. At 1 p.m. nonfiction finalist John Matteson discusses Eden's Outcasts, a portrait of the relationship between unworldly, philosophic Bronson Alcott and his fiercely independent daughter Louisa May. At 2 p.m. poetry winner Henri Cole reads from Blackbird and Wolf, his sixth published collection. At 2:30 p.m. Mark and Gerald Foster, winners of the children's/young adult award, discuss Whale Port, an illustrated history of the Massachusetts whaling industry set in the fictional town of Tuckanucket. At 3:00 nonfiction finalist Eric Jay Dolin presents a version of the whaling story for adults with his Leviathan, a study of the New England whaling industry and its “iron men in wooden boats.” At 4 p.m. nonfiction winner Eve LaPlante discusses Salem Witch Judge, the story of Samuel Sewall, the magistrate who presided at the 1692 witchcraft trials and later repented his decisions.
