So, a quick recap of the meeting for "Year of Wonders"
We had a showing of about five or so people. Not bad. And for the most part, I think we liked the book. Ok, some folks barely started it and decided it wasn't for them, true. But I think we agreed that it was one of those books that, if you liked the subject, you liked it. If you weren't into the topic, the history, whatever, it wasn't happening for you. I was one of the ones sucked right into it. From the very beginning i liked the characters. I believed in Anna, I understood her decisions and beliefs. She seemed very real to me. And so did her father (the jerk) and the handsome tailor, the goody witch girl, the minister's wife, the miner's daughter, etc. I found myself wrapped up in each of their lives. Ok, the end was a bit soap opera-ish for me... I was still glad it was a happy ending for Anna. And it was a "year of wonders" after all.
I was impressed with Geraldine Brook's writing as well and look forward to reading more of her books.
Happy reading!
