Current Readings

OK, so I finished this book "Morvern Callar". It a debut by some Scottish dude (aside from Renaissance Faires, I have a strange affinity for all things Scottish. Could be a previous life...) Anyway, I'd like to recommend it because truly sucked me in and keep me turning pages and it is so rare to find a book like that. Morvern is such a crazy character. She is this totally independent, self reliant person whose actions are shocking and still somehow understandable. Trouble is the dialog and setting. She's a young, underprivileged Scottish girl who ends up living at the rave scene in the Mediterranean. I had to re-read passages, the etymology continually tripped me up, and the music references went totally over my head but still, I want to recommend it. True, the ending did leave me expecting a bit more from Morvern. All that being said, if anyone has any interest in tackling it, I think it's worth every moment, and it's not a long book overall. It was also made into a film (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0300214/) which I am totally going to try and track down. Samantha Morton is a great actress...

Which brings me to my next book... Carla I think we mentioned Margaret Atwood a few times... I am reading "Oryx and Crate". I am about 4 chapters in, and oh my god, she is brilliant. I mean really. I can't get over how much I have enjoyed the first chapters. Her writing is inspirational. It's a bit sci-fi (her usual future dystopian society thing) but thought maybe "The Blind Assassin" could be a good read for our group? A little less sci-fi but hopefully just as quality?

And don't forget, Saturday is the author's event at GAR Hall in Marshfield Hills. Hope some of you will be there!
